First Week Sales for The Last of Us are the Best of 2013

The Last of Us

With E3 still fresh in our minds, some may think that the biggest news for Sony right now is the PS4. However, thanks to the success of The Last of Us, the PS3 might steal the spotlight one last time before the PS4 takes over this holiday season. Early projections show that the game sold close to 1.3 million units worldwide.

According to early estimates, The Last of Us has the highest first week sales when compared to any other title released in 2013. Of course, with the great reviews the game has been getting, this should not be surprising. This holds true in not only the United States but in the UK as well.

If the 1.3 million copies sold if accurate, this means that The Last of Us outsold the opening week of BioShock Infinite by close to 200,000 units. What makes this even more impressive is the fact that BioShock Infinite launched on both the Xbox 360 and PS3. The Last of Us is exclusive to the PS3.

VGChartz has The Last of Us at selling just over 500,000 units in the United States. This is a good deal higher than the 338,000 pre-orders the game had before launch. In the UK, the game sold around 120,000. In fact, in the UK, this is the largest opening week for a new IP since Rockstar released L.A. Noire nearly two years ago.

The Last of Us is best described as a third-person, survival horror post-apocalyptic action-adventure game. It was developed by Naughty Dog, which is the same studio that brought you other great franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter and, of course, Uncharted. During The Last of Us, players take control of Joel. The main goal of the game is to help escort Ellie in a post-apocalyptic United States set in 2033.

As players escort Ellie, they must protect her against Zombie-like creatures. However, the player must also be on the lookout for other humans who will do anything to survive. In order to make it during these hard times, the player will have to scavenge items to make new weapons and medical supplies.

The reception for The Last of Us has been universally positive. In fact, The Last of Us was able to get a perfect score with over 30 well-known gaming publications. Companies that gave the game a perfect score include Edge, Computer and Video Games, GamesRadar, IGN, Official PlayStation Magazine (UK) and Eurogamer just to name a few.

Game sites that did not give it a perfect score still gave it extremely high marks. One of the lowest scores given to the game was a 7.5 out of 10, and that came from Polygon. People posting in the comment section of the review seemed very upset with the score, despite the fact that 7.5 is still a decently high mark. This is one game that gamers feel is worth defending.
